Google review link vs QR code: which gets you more reviews?

Both point to the same place: the box where a customer taps a star rating and types a sentence about your business. The difference is entirely about when and how the customer sees it, and that's what decides whether they actually use it.

The direct link

A review link is a URL. It works anywhere text works: a WhatsApp message, an SMS, an email signature, an invoice footer. Its strength is reach past the moment someone is standing in your shop; you can send it hours or days after the visit, whenever the customer is in a good mood about you again.

  • Best for: following up after the job is done, not just while the customer is on-site.
  • Weak point: someone has to remember to send it, one customer at a time, unless it's automated.

The QR code

A QR poster is the same link, printed somewhere a customer's phone camera can find it while they're physically in front of you: next to the card machine, on the table, on the invoice you hand over. Its strength is catching the moment right after a good experience, when intent is highest and friction has to be near zero.

  • Best for: walk-in or seated businesses where the customer is right there: salons, restaurants, waiting rooms.
  • Weak point: only reaches the customers who happen to look at it. Most won't.

The honest answer: neither wins alone

A poster only catches people already looking at your counter. A link only gets sent if a human remembers to send it, and most days nobody does. The businesses that actually see their review count climb use both, plus a third channel that neither a link nor a poster can do by itself: an automatic message sent to every customer, not just the ones who happened to glance at a QR code or the ones a busy owner remembered to text. See our WhatsApp templates if you're sending that message by hand for now.

Quick pick

  • Have a counter or waiting room customers sit in? Print the QR poster today, it costs nothing.
  • Do jobs off-site (mechanics, home services, trades)? Put the link on the invoice or the WhatsApp you send when the job's done.
  • Want it to happen for every customer without anyone remembering? That's the one job neither a poster nor a manual link solves.

PeakReviews sends the link on WhatsApp automatically after every job, no poster or memory required, and drafts your replies too. Start free, R299/month after, cancel anytime.
