How to get more Google reviews in South Africa: the 2026 playbook
When someone searches "salon near me" or "plumber in Roodepoort", Google decides who gets shown first. Three signals dominate that decision: how many reviews you have, what your rating is, and how recently reviews keep arriving. Not your website. Not your logo. Reviews.
The good news: most of your competitors do nothing about this. A steady five to ten new reviews a month puts you ahead of almost every small business in your suburb. Here is what actually works in South Africa.
Before you start: see exactly where you stand. Our free review scorecard grades your review count, rating and freshness against five nearby competitors in 20 seconds, so you know which of the six steps below actually matters most for you.
1. Ask. Every time. That's most of the game.
Around 20 to 30% of customers will leave a review when asked at the right moment. Almost none do it unprompted. The businesses with 400 reviews aren't better than you; they ask more consistently than you.
2. Ask on WhatsApp, not email
South Africa runs on WhatsApp: over 90% of us use it, and messages get opened more than 95% of the time. Email manages roughly 20%. A short, friendly WhatsApp with your direct review link, sent within a couple of hours of a good visit, is the single highest-converting review ask that exists here.
What to send: "Hi Lerato! Thanks for visiting today. If you enjoyed it, would you leave us a quick Google review? It takes 20 seconds." Plus your review link. That's it. No essays, no begging.
3. Get your direct review link right
Don't send people to your Google profile and hope they find the button. There's a special link that opens the five-star box immediately. Grab yours with our free review link generator and use it everywhere: WhatsApp, invoices, email signatures.
4. Put a QR poster where people wait
For walk-in businesses, a QR code at the till catches customers while the card machine does its thing. Print one free with the QR poster maker. Best spots: next to the card machine, reception desks, tables, the back of the bathroom door.
5. Stay on the right side of POPIA and Google
- Only message customers who agreed to hear from you, and honour opt-outs immediately.
- Never pay for reviews or offer discounts for them. Google deletes them and can suspend your listing. See what actually happens if you buy reviews.
- Ask everyone, not just happy customers. "Review gating" breaks Google's rules, and mixed real reviews are more convincing anyway.
- Send from an official WhatsApp Business channel, not your personal number.

6. Reply to every review
Google has said engagement matters, and future customers read your replies. A warm thank you for the good ones; a calm, generous response to the bad ones. We wrote a full guide: how to respond to a bad Google review. If you would rather copy-paste than write one from scratch, our reply template library has three ready-made replies for your exact industry and situation.
The lazy version
